Selecting the Right Programming Language for a Web Application

Selecting the Right Programming Language for a Web Application
Selecting the right programming language for a web application can be a task in itself. What with different applications performing different tasks, it has become very impracticable for programmers to choose from a list of programming languages. Then how does one go about selecting the right language for a web application?

Thanks to the enormous expansion and growth of the field of website development, websites across the world can now be built with a number of hosting languages – from Cold Fusion and Perl to ASP.NET, PHP, JSP, and so on. These web application development languages are generally classified into 2 basic languages:
  • Open Source Languages
  • Proprietary Languages
Some of the more popular languages are described in full detail below:

1.PHP – PHP is probably one of the most common and preferential programming languages used amongst web developers today. Why so? It is flexible and plain. It was initially developed by a large community of members who have since striven to make it more proficient and successful. What stands out the most about this language is that it is completely free! What's more, this language is updated more regualrly than most of the other programming languages, making it very popular amongst the developers. Although a few errors have been noted, its countless advantages should just about negate the faults. Some of the faults include: event based errors, lack of case sensitivity, etc can be a real burden to the programmers.

2.ASP.NET – ASP.NET is probably the most adaptable programming language available. It can be applied by almost anyone and can be applied with compiled languages such as VB, Lisp, Cobol, C and with other scripted languages like VBScript, Pyhton, Jscript and more. This language is also compatible with C++ Builder, WebMatrix, VisualStudio, etc. However, this language has its own set of drawbacks since it is slower when it comes to performing operations. However, this language is enormously complicated and you are required to develop its benefits with a great deal of expertise.

3.JSP – JSP is an open source language that can be used without having to know the Java Script. The tag extensions that are used in this language are easy and straightforward. Furthermore, it allows Java tag library developers to incorporate quite easily the simple tag handlers, which is quite task when using other website application development languages.

4.Perl – Perl is another popular and well liked programming language that is extremely influential in its form. A programmer would most likely get just about any tool from this language. It has many community members who have been working hard to make this language as competent and successful in each and every way.
